Art Is My Best Friend and Visuals Educate Me

I Depend on Creativity

I’m a visual thinker. My mind understands pictures before words and sounds. It’s as much of a blessing as a curse.

Let me give you an example. It takes me twice as long to read a manufacturer’s manual without pictures than one with illustrations. My brain understands pictures faster than the words.

It didn’t bother me as a young child, but by the time I entered high school, it became a problem. Every child learns in their own way. It still bothers me that my potential was viewed as less, compared to the very academic children who excelled.

I see some change now in outdoor schools and Montesorri school systems. That’s encouraging. I think kids who are allowed to learn in their own way will thrive. I would have had a better school experience if it was outside a classroom environment.

I Need Repetition

I need time to comprehend something and at times that comes with repetition and visuals. Once I grasp a concept, it stays and I’m able to complete the task. Kids like me are smart and capable, but the education system didn’t have the patience to recognize us.
