Why I Make Junk Journals

When I start a junk journal, the possibilities are endless. There are no rules, only a sense of freedom.

Art has been part of my life since I was a very little girl. I can remember picking up leaves, rocks, rusty nails and even a grungy old book. I just love vintage things. I desperately want to revive them because everything has beauty. It doesn’t matter if the lace is dirty, or the pages are torn. I see a story in each fabulous flaw. A life untold. Somebody owned that book and turned its pages. Another bought the lace because they had a plan for it. Some would say that it was pretty once, but I say it still is.

I can draw a little, but I’m very rusty. I’m not a naturally talented artist and I need time to hone that skill. I just don’t have that time right now. I wish I did which is why junk journaling is so appealing to me. I don’t have to practice anything.

The 7 Reasons Why Junk Journaling is So Awesome

No rules — There are no rules attached to this art. Creativity is the ruler here. If I want to tear something, then ‘dirty’ its edges with ink. I will because I can. If I want to sew fabric trim to an old book page, by golly just try and stop me! If the colors don’t match, even better.
